When Susan Stripling releases educational content, you know it’s going to be good. And while she’s been a prolific educator in the past, the breadth of knowledge in her new wedding photography educational site – The Wedding School – is a little staggering.
Susan has been generating wedding photography educational content for quite awhile, whether through her own blog The Dynamic Range or via her numerous courses from Creative Live. With the launch of The Wedding School, however, Susan is creating a unique learning environment for wedding photographers as she invites you into a coordinated 6-week online course that covers just about every topic imaginable related to running a successful wedding photography business. This is pretty much wedding photography college.
Unlike the way other educational sites and courses are set up, The Wedding School is a constantly updated repository of skills and knowledge necessary to operating a successful wedding photography business in today’s market. Course material consists of a series of instructional videos and corresponding PDF materials, and is divided up into five general areas of knowledge: Business & Finance, Sales & Marketing, Wedding Skills, Post Production, and Photo Skills.
Each high-level area covers various topics, such as Pricing + Profitability, The Ceremony, Branding, Social Media, etc. Each topic is then broken down into an array of 5-10 minute video tutorials covering sub-topics. For instance, Social Media covers finding your voice, personal and business Facebook pages, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat. It’s really easy to watch them all and cover everything from top to bottom, or dial in to a particular area you want to learn about specifically.
Susan guides the discussion week by week through the topics, while an ongoing online discussion between her and students results in a weekly roundup Q&A session to cover anything people want to dive deeper into. In addition to all of the laid out material, the real meat gets filled in with the Learning Library of video content that covers in-depth topics across the board, and which will be expanded as time goes on.
The way that The Wedding School has been structured is a really smart blend of self-paced learning, classroom discussion, and roundup conversation, along with a deep library of video content that will only continue to grow. And if you’re like me, you appreciate the down to earth and direct way in which Susan delivers her years of experience into actionable knowledge. The only complaint I could find is that the videos currently can’t be downloaded for watching later, but this is already something being worked on to fix. For the time being, the PDF materials that accompany the videos serve as a great cross-reference to the material discussed and are thorough reading material for learning on the go.
Here’s an excerpt from the official press release announcing the launch of The Wedding School.
